severity #511596 important retitle #511596 Won't connect with network-manager disconnected or stopped thanks
I have tracked the problem down to me having network-manager installed, but not using it. I have written my own script to connect to faculty wireless network since I found network-manager to be misbehaving. In any case: empathy_idle_set_presence: NM not connected It is apparent this affects only a small number of users (either you use n-m, or you have it uninstalled): for this reason, I'll take the honor of reducing severity to important. I still don't find it deserves "normal", since it DOES affect users. I have n-m installed just-in-case I need something, but I don't find it particularly reliable. Ergo, I use my own script. And then, although I am connected to wlan, just because n-m thinks I'm not, empathy also refuses to connect. Same thing happens if I /etc/init.d/network-manager stop. This was already encountered by some users, but apparently not perceived as important by upstream[1] since it uses network manager only "if you have it installed".
