I have never heard about such a problem so it may be just a result of some problem in your system. There are only a few things Speech Dispatcher does before forking, so the blocking you describe is strange. Could you please investigate what's the problem? Set LogLevel to 5 in /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf. Then try to start Speech Dispatcher and look at all files in /var/log/speech-dispatcher/. If you don't identify the cause there, would you send me contents of those files?
