I just want to confirm, that the problem is in difference in device mapping in the installer and in final system, i got the exact same error. removing devicemap file, and thereby triggering update-grub to regenerate with call to grub, solved the problem. making update-grub regenerate devicemap every time (including deleting the old one) would have solved my problem, but might create other problems.
But just an error message telling me that it was the convert functions call to grup-probe that failed, and I should take a look at the device map, would have saved me a lot of time.
