Section 8.6 of the Debian Installation Guide, "Compiling a New Kernel" should be replaced with a statement that Debian does not contain support for installing nonstandard kernels and that people could use the naked linux make targets and learn a bit about initrd construction if they need a custom kernel.
Additionally, the web is littered with helpful search engine hits pointing to make-kpkg that will lead people to fruitlessly attempt to use it. Perhaps kernel-package should be replaced with a tombstone package with a make-kpkg that just explains it no longer exists.
