Package: python2.5
Version: 2.5.2-11
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.1
Hi!
debian/copyright of python2.5 (and I suppose python2.4) fails to say
that some files are linked to GNU Readline:
/usr/lib/python2.5/lib-dynload/readline.so
GNU Readline is licensed under GPLv2+
Since Python license is compatible with GPL, this would just mean that
a notice about this file must be added to debian/copyright (DFSG#7).
Because this library is loaded on the fly, I don't know the real
implication on the license of the whole python2.5 executable.
Another solution (post-Lenny) could be to replace GNU Readline by
Editline which is a BSD licensed source-compatible GNU Readline
replacement.
Thanks.

Hi Vincent,
thanks for looking into licensing issues in Debian.
How exactly is the python license GPL-incompatible?
If you scroll down a screen or two on the license[1] and move your
attention to the right column, you will find the assertion that all
recent versions of python have a GPL-compatible license, even indicating
where the FSF's opinion differs from the python copyright holders.
In particular, all python versions from oldstable onwards are
undisputedly GPL-compatible.
Please don't file bugs without specifying the problem if the rest of the
world believes there is none.
Kind regards
T.
