Oui, as you wrote, 

    $ export SDL_MOUSE_RELATIVE=0

worked around the bug, and 

    # dpkg --purge unclutter
    
fixed it.

I believe the technical term is...  "SWEET!"

I'm in awe of how quickly you and Lucas solved
this.
