Thanks Eric. David, could you confirm?

patching and recompiling is not my best. i'd prefer you/someone send me a patched grub to test...

i've done some more tests:

0) i've reinstalled the lenny rc2 netinstall image on /dev/hda5
1) i've installed grub 0.97-41 (lenny), -42 (sid), -30 (snapshot.debian.net) and none worked.
2) then i've installed 0.97-29 and worked
3) and then i've installed -30 again and it again didn't work.
4) since it complains about /boot/grub/stage1 i've diffed stage1 from -29 and from -30 and they have the same content. 5) i've rebooted using d-i lenny rc2 and "fsck.ext2 -f 7dev/hda5" finds no error, so the filesystem is clean. 6) i've also found that with version -41 it complains abous grub-install line 384 and with version -42 the conflicting line is 369. now i see it is the same 'for' bucle. 7) with the system booted, created a ext2 (e2fsprogs version 1.40.8) partition in /dev/hda7 and i got that grub-install /dev/hda7 version -29 works, version -30 not.
