Whether I simply type the command ffmpeg or try to convert a video I get the
following error:

ffmpeg: symbol lookup error: ffmpeg: undefined symbol: ffm_nopts

I searched the web and can't find any hints about this problem that pertain to
my situation.

no, this is not a bug in the debian ffmpeg package at all.

Obviously you have non-debian sources, namely
http://debian-multimedia.org enabled on your system. These are likely to
interfere with the ffmpeg packages from debian.

Unreproducible with a clean debian system.

Either install the ffmpeg package from debian-multimedia.org, or remove
all packages in this list above that start with version '3:' and
reinstall ffmpeg.
