Dear Neil,

Thanks for filing the bug report. I had similar experiences, which I
resolved as follows.

First I did as you did:
/var/lib/apt/lists/ and setting the absurdly high,
APT::Cache-Limit "268435456";

(I used a lower limit)

I then took the list of marked changes and saved the marked files in
synaptic.

I then unselected the last half of all the marked files. Then I
applied, and it went well.

I continued doing this until I was able to identify the problem files.

They were:
libx11-6
libx11-data
libx11-dev

They have unresolvable cross dependancies which jams synaptic.

It would be nice that the user gets a message that the dependancies
are screwed up, but that was what I found.

Please try again unselecting the above three files. If it still does
not work try the same approach I did and report back your findings.
