It is meanly to prevent package which depends on type-handling to use it in experimental (i found out that gnome-applets 2.10 does though it seems it managed to compile). dpkg-architecture does not output the gnu system with the help output. It now have a switch to get the "architectures" ( -L) but it does not match with previous list of debian arch nor is gnu systems (a mix of both). Maybe the conflict between both have been fixed ?
