Package: sysvinit Version: 2.86.ds1-55 Severity: grave --- Please enter the report below this line. --- sysctl -p seemed to have stopped working on my (mostly) lenny installation some time ago.
After peppering /lib/lsb/init-functions with lines like [ -d /proc ] && echo -n "(filemax: `cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max`) " I found this piece of damning evidence: [...] (filemax: 32768) Stopping boot logger: bootlogd (filemax: 8192). [...] Please make bootlogd not touch fs.file-max sysctl variable, or at least not lower it. Userspace breaks in weird ways when there are not enough fds available.
