Hi TeX-live folks, the bbm fonts do have a readme (bbm.readme, not readme.bbm which is for the macros and fd files) from the old days which sounds as if the fonts were intended to be free, but it lacks an explicit license statement (and does not at all touch the subject of modification).
Therefore I'd like to try to contact their author, Gilles Robert. I haven't tried yet the e-mail address given in the readme, since it points to the server of a university institute, but their homepage does not list him as member of the staff. Any ideas? He's listed in the math genealogy project, and there's a link there to http://www.ams.org/mathscinet/search/authors.html?authorName=651685&Submit=Search which I'm not entitled to use - but I don't expect much from that.
