What error messages does xine-ui show when trying to play something?
(There should be a dialog showing a "more" button that takes you to the
engine log. The information there is usually quite helpful for
debugging...)

Are you sure you haven't accidentially deleted /usr/lib/xine/plugins or
set a different xine plugin path?

Actually, xine's using its own codecs for most stuff, definitely for DVD
playback...
