Package: mdadm
Version: 1.7.0-2
Severity: normal

Commands like

  mdadm --assemble --scan --auto=yes

doesn't work without a pre-existing mdN device node. Without --scan it
seems to be good. It would be nice to handle this situation in mdadm,
but at least the manual page mdadm(8) should mention that --scan and
--auto are incompatible.

How to reproduce:

# fgrep /tmp /etc/fstab
/dev/md3 /tmp ext3 defaults 0 2
# umount /tmp
# mdadm --stop /dev/md3
# rm /dev/md3
# cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

As new co-maintainer of mdadm, I herewith acknowledge my previous
NMUs, which have all persisted through the latest release, 1.9.0-4.
These bugs are therefore ready to be archived.
