Hi, First, "Failed to exec method /usr/lib/apt/methods/ftp" is very strange situation. You did check by apt-get upgrade/dist-upgrade, but it doesn't help investigation. ftp method will be called when update or install really something. I believe you will meet some errors when you do "apt-get update".
Please check your /usr/lib/apt/methods/ftp. In my environment, apt 0.5.28.6 for i386 is: # cd /usr/lib/apt/methods/ftp # ls -l ftp -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 49464 Mar 22 16:18 ftp # md5sum ftp 9b5275adb20636be2c320bb046c17846 ftp I think your environment is something broken, synaptic and apt are innocence.
