This seems to be a known problem due to the change in update-alternatives
1.4.0 (note that dpkg 1.4.0 is post-stable) behavior and was fixed in
dictionaries-common 0.81.1. update-alternatives suddenly changed to return
an error when no alternatives are left.

See

http://bugs.debian.org/423012
http://bugs.debian.org/423124
http://bugs.debian.org/423163

Please check your dpkg version. If as seems is not the stable version, the
above stands. If so, since there is nothing a package can do against future
changes in other packages, or against an arbitrary mixing of old and new
packages I will close this bug report which by the way belongs to 0.70.10
and not to 0.90.0.

So, if you use stable dictionaries-common, please use stable dpkg. Anyway,
please check your dpkg version and let me know.

Lowering severity too, since this will only hit extremely side cases.
