It _can't_ _possibly_ _work_ because the binary is x86 code.

No. Build it for any architecture except m68k and sparc. That is, the
relevant line in debian/control should look like this:

Architecture: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390
