Do you have a reference for why "Replaces" is necessary? According to my reading of policy, only "Conflicts" is necessary, but I might well have missed something. With the "Replaces", aptitude (eg) will silently remove the old network-manager-gnome. Also, why the name change from network-manager-gnome to network-manager-applet?
