Syntax is: “dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot”, see the manpage.
BTW, I'd say 2/3 or 3/4 of the buildds use fakeroot (and not sudo), and
see the results: <http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=&pkg=git-core>
