Something must have changed because the following versions of vlc and ffmpeg work fine with vlc-fbx: libvlc0_0.8.6.c-1_i386.deb vlc-nox_0.8.6.c-1_i386.deb vlc_0.8.6.c-1_i386.deb libavcodec0d_0.cvs20060823-8_i386.deb libavformat0d_0.cvs20060823-8_i386.deb So ffmpeg or vlc has ceased producing MPEG-2 output somewhere between these version and the actual ones, at least on my system.
