just tested on laptop, does *not* affect > 2 years old hitachi dvd reader drive:
Model=HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-S250, FwRev=0012 with debian stable kernel.
estimate max. affected dvd reader drives < 25% so far, assume it is a
firmware bug in my toshiba dvd reader drive or kernel 2.6.22.x x86_64 bug.
pls set bug priority to normal and unconfirmed, thx.
