I am "alwalys on" with the persist option, although forcibly disconnected by my provider every 24h. Thank to the persist option pppd reconnects automatically after a disconnect. Now the problem: The first connects succeeds and all behaves as exspected. After the the first dis- and reconnect (i.e. after 24h) pppd eats up all cpu time. The reconnect itself works as expected, but the systems becomes notably slow with pppd playing cpu-hog.
