OK, so the problem turned out to be that aptitutde had decided to upgrade tetex-base to 2007-9 instead of leaving it at 3.whatever (I could have sworn I told it not to do that, but that's another story).
So, it seems that this not a "grave" bug since it is installable, but perhaps it is still "serious" bug since it doesn't have sufficient dependencies to ensure installability?
