I think you all got bitten by #420390, "Purging tetex transition packages removes texlive configuration files". This bug is solved now, but for those who already did purge, the only solution is to reinstall the texlive packages (in particular texlive-base and texlive-base-bin, but that might not be sufficient) with the dpkg option --force-confmiss.
