This is also what caused the breakage in the upgrade: it didn't stop, and since the upgrade could not start it by force, it banged out. Since downgrading didn't work, the problem is probably being caused by something else in the system (it doesn't mean it is not a bug in hpssd, however, but something else caused it to trigger). Try killing hpssd (leave hpiod running), and run this: hpssd -g If it seems to have worked, (it says Starting async loop...), try printing and post the output of hpssd here.
