Ok, then this is not a problem with the nvidia-kernel package at all: it means that you don't have the nvidia binary X driver installed (the nvidia-glx package), only the kernel module; so as a result your X configuration is invalid. I'm closing this bug, since it happens to be the only thing keeping the nvidia-glx package out of testing.
