Ah, that looks like a bug. I can reproduce it With the volume created
by the /usr/share/doc/xdelta2/examples/script-insert script, and I can
even create a bigger error when specifying the MD5 digest to extract:

/tmp[1374]$ xdelta2 xversions test.volume test.archive
INFO [xdfs] Version Length MD5
INFO [xdfs] 0 16651 25f2a361bd66009fd6978164e319e5fe
INFO [xdfs] 1 1977 1dcf802461e44d280d1cb857c2b643ec
/tmp[1375]$ xdelta2 retrieve test.volume test.archive 0 foo
XDFS-ERROR: Invalid version label: should be number or digest value: 0
DBFS-ERROR: abort [TXN not active] (1 active)
XDFS-ERROR: command failed: Invalid argument
/tmp[1376]$ xdelta2 retrieve test.volume test.archive
25f2a361bd66009fd6978164e319e5fe foo

** ERROR **: file xdfs_cpp.h: line 665 (class TXN & NODEBASE<MAJOR_DESC>::txn()
const): assertion failed: (_txn)
aborting...
Abandon (core dumped)

Now all operations fail with:

/tmp[1377]$ xdelta2 retrieve test.volume test.archive 1 foo
DBFS-ERROR: crashed process PID 20434: xdelta2 retrieve test.volume
test.archive 25f2a361bd66009fd6978164e319e5fe foo
DBFS-ERROR: at least one process has crashed: please killproc and run recovery
PROP-ERROR: check_recovery: Database requires operator attention
XDFS-ERROR: command failed: Database requires operator attention

If I attempt recovery:

/tmp[1388]$ xdelta2 recover test.volume
DBFS-ERROR: crashed process PID 20434: xdelta2 retrieve test.volume
test.archive 25f2a361bd66009fd6978164e319e5fe foo
DBFS-ERROR: 1 active processes still exist: stop these first
PROP-ERROR: check_recovery: Database requires operator attention
XDFS-ERROR: command failed: Database requires operator attention

And well, PID 20434 is not here any more !
