Yes I've also changed other options in fontconfig but the problem still
appears (I've only not restarted the X session, but I don't think it is
necessary for the changes to take place).

Nice page, I'll probably use it in the future, but I've not found
anything relevant to this particular problem (apart from what you
already told me).

Do you know, how can I check what particular font (and what options) are
being used by a running scilab? This way I could compare my two
instalations and find out why one of them it is working and not the
other one.
