The error you get in sid is due to a bug in kaffe. I reported it upstream, and it has been fixed in kaffe CVS. Hopefully they will release 1.1.5 soon, and we can close this report. I'm also trying to make sure it will make it possible to upload a more recent version of nice in Debian.
Not assigning the bug to kaffe to avoid bothering the maintainers, since the bug is already analysed an fixed upstream.
