My (admittedly quick - I didn't bother building all the debs, just ran build and install targets after the patch) shows it to work. All the .la files under debian/tmp had the correct libdir settings. However, the install target did bomb at some point trying to remove a system file under /usr/lib/perl, but I didn't investigate further - my only plan was to find the way to pass the equivalent of DESTDIR to make.
