I can't replicate this with current sarge on i386: yacas version 1.0.55-6 starts up without trouble for me. (Same with sid with version 1.0.57-2.) I did notice that 1.0.57-2 has failed to build on a couple of architectures due to problems in the X package and had not yet been rebuilt, but after asking about it from Steve Langasek, it should now be in the queue.
