Is there a file /tmp/update-auctex-elisp.XXXXXXX (with the X's replaced by random chars/numbers), and is there a file CompilationLog.gz somewhere in a directory with auctex in its name, probably in /usr/share/emacs21/site-lisp/auctex/CompilationLog.gz?
