Can you check that VTAllocation is not set to a number (eg. VTAllocation=7) or set to "on" in "/etc/gdm/gdm.conf".
It could be either that you choose set this option manually or that the new kernel has a bug with automatic allocation (in this case this bug may affect other login manager and be reassigned to the kernel).
