Neil, stuff for you below…

Frédéric, Could you be a little more explicit about what you tried
(even though this was six months ago)?

When I assemble an array as md42 and then change the mdadm.conf line
to md2, the array is brought up as md2 on next boot, but the
preferred-minor field is not updated.

To do that would require me to pass --update=super-minor to the
assembly call, and I am not sure if this is what we want.

I think a better solution would be to make mdadm be able to change
the preferred minor field of a running array. I don't see any reason
why it should not be able to do so other than it currently not
working.
