Package: netinst
Version: 20120304-21:30
Hi all,
I don't think I used the correct package name and version for the Wheezy
netinstaller, but I couldn't find the proper information on this.
Apologies!.
This is the official version from README.txt:
Debian GNU/Linux testing "Wheezy" - Official Snapshot amd64 NETINST
Binary-1
Problem description:
When the netinstaller detects hardware, and it decides additional
firmware is needed, it tells the user to insert media containing the
correct firmware files. (for example: iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode,
iwlwifi-6000g2a-5.ucode, iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode). However, when a USB
stick containing these files is inserted, the program does not search
the newly installed media.
The __only__ way to use these additional files is to have the additional
media inserted __while__booting__the_installer__.
If you know this, this is not such a big deal, the workaround is: go
through the installation as far as possible, take note of all needed
firmware files. There might be more in subsequent installation stages.
Then abort the installation if the hardware detection phase is
completed. Prepare another USB stick containing the files. Insert the
stick while booting and the files will be found during installation.
However, if you don't know that the stick must be present during
booting, you might have a permanent installation failure. Two possible
solutions:
- after the message that additional media is to be inserted, search all
possible media again for any newly inserted media, or
- change the message regarding the additional media, stating that the
media must be prepared and installed during booting of the installer.
I can confirm this problem on a Sony VPCSE13FX. The detection of missing
firmware is correct on both wireless and wired connections, and
installation of the firmware is eventually handled correctly. Some fun:
the installer requests even firmware versions (iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode)
which is not available yet in Debian Sid, while the request as such is
correct.
