This is historical. /usr/bin/banner prints a horizontal banner: $banner "Hello" # # # # ###### # # #### # # # # # # # ####### ##### # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # ###### ###### ###### #### used for (more or less) important script output. /usr/games/banner prints a vertical output for print-out on old line printers in order to hang on the wall.
