2.7 does not allow an underscore there - and additionally does a couple of additional checks there.
Would it make sense to grep the code from 2.7 and inject it into 2.6. I know that you are more into pushing upstream development, but from the Debian Edu perspective there is an interest in getting the old code more fool proof (which it mostly already is :-) ).
