I don't know exactly which details you're looking for, but the default
for tarballs published on ftp.gnome.org is now to use xz compression.
This is specified with the "dist-xz" option in configure.ac for the
modules and the tarball should simply have been produced via "make dist".

Are there any specific details I should ask upstream about that would help?
