Correct, it’s about time to update it, now that most packages have been
rebuilt for GHC 7.4.1.

Actually, this is a feature. The official platform defines a specific
set of versions, and users who want to develop against this particular
set don’t want suddenly a new version of some library on their machine.
At least not if there is not a corresponding platform update.

It seems that you are suggesting that there is a need for a general
haskell-metapackage that would pull in the platform and “most commonly
and generally useful” haskell libraries. If that is the case, then that
should be a package of its own
