Hi Paul, It looks like you might be talking about "information" mode which can be activated with "Ctrl+x i".
Does it look like desirable feature or do you want something more advanced? I'd say directory listing in other panel may have unexpected side effects for remote/unreachable directories so I doubt it is such a good idea. (It could be really slow for large directories so it may be also challenging to implement without introducing unwanted side effects) Anyway this is something for upstream to consider. I don't expect them to implement it soon as they seems to be overwhelmed with open issues.
