I'm running lxde on my net-top and selected it via tasksel; the lxde
task-lxde-desktop.

task-lxde-desktop depends on xdm

xdm however, fails to set the session as active (even though it does
get set as local and using the x terminal).

After much search I ran across something that mentioned lightdm as an
alternate login screen.

lightdm solves the issue. The solution is to either fix xdm or make
anything that depends on xdm depend on a placeholder that effectively
means 'dm provider'; with a priority list of providers weighted more
heavily to those which provide consolekit integration support as well
as some method of weighting dependent upon already installed library
files (this might be automatic given installed/non-installed packages;
I'm not sure how dpkg reacts).
