After a bit more digging, I found the bug in upstream's bug tracker, at: https://cfengine.com/bugtracker/bug_view_advanced_page.php?bug_id=163 , where they mention it was fixed in r1089, meaning this patch: http://source.cfengine.com/websvn/comp.php?repname=Cfengine+core&compare[]=%2F@1088&compare[]=%2F@1089
