gnome-rdp currently has this Depends openssh-client | xtightvncviewer | rdesktop …which I agree isn't optimal, but I can't really think of a better way of expressing this. We ceratainly don't want to depend or recommend all of the possible backends because it is very usual that a user would not want to have all installed. Displaying an informational error is probably the best way to do it.
