The problem is that NVIDIA themselves have not released versions of the older drivers that support the current X.org server ABI. The packages are still in the archive because they're usable with downgraded older servers, but they won't be in the next release because they won't work with the X server that will be in that release. Unfortunately, there isn't anything Debian can do about this; NVIDIA needs to release new drivers, and that apparently isn't a priority.
