Hi! The behaviour you're describing is quite normal. PackageKit builds a desktop-file database on it's first update. After this is done, it shouldn't use much CPU anymore. This is only a problem on very old machines and after the database is created, PK should work using less CPU. Maybe updating the DB can be done in another way, using less CPU, but I think it would be much slower then... I'll take a look at it.
