WS Trim is mainly useful as a minor mode that does various sorts of whitespace trimming, but only on lines you edit. It can remove trailing whitespace, convert leading whitespace to tabs or spaces, etc. The package is my own. I wrote it a long time ago and use it myself all the time (currently in Emacs 23.2), but I know there are others out there that find it useful as well - see e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/ questions/3705303/untabify-and-remove-trailing-whitespaces-in-emacs. It's licensed under GPLv2.
