When I open a new xnethack game on a laptop with 1366 x 768 resolution, the window is vertically maximized, and the dungeon map section is shrunken so that moving the character up and down on the map makes the map to scroll. Therefore, in this layout, it is not possible to see the entire map at once. I am able to resize the upper message history section for every game, so that the map doesn't need to scroll, but not every user will know about this capability. I tried to set the font size manually at game launch using something like this: NETHACKOPTIONS=font_size_messages:s,windowtype:x11 nethack or NETHACKOPTIONS=font_size_messages:8,windowtype:x11 nethack .... inspired by: http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Options but I couldn't get nethack to change font size. It would be nice if the default font was smaller. I know that nethack-x11 uses a good font size for my screen resolution on Trisquel 5.0, an Ubuntu 11.04 derivative.
