I got some advice from upstream:

Firstly, check syslog to see if the system has logged a crash.

Secondly, run the server as a separate process with its own terminal
and see if it produces an error message:

        mocp -SF

then in a separate VC or xterm:

        mocp

If and when it crashes, check the first process for a message.
