Thanks for the offer. My objections to auto-generation are somewhat deeper than worries about menu-xdg maintenance, though. I'm just not convinced that it's really necessary or helpful, and has inherent problems (as I outlined on debian-devel). But if someone does go ahead with it, I'm sure your help will be very welcome.
