I did not have "contrib" in the apt line. I had simply copied the line from the backports instructions (deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main). I have now added contrib (deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib), updated the package list, purged the nividia-settings package and reinstalled. It pulled down the 290.10-1~bpo60+1 version which works as expected, I can now access the screen settings without the error. Great! Thanks!

One further question, wtih the backports repository enabled I have a number of packages that can be upgraded. Should I go ahead and update them all or just remove the backports line from the sources.list file now that I have a working copy of nvidia-settings.

Thanks,
Conan
